Compressor oil being poured into a piston compressor crankcase — how to choose air compressor oil

How to Choose Oil for an Air Compressor

The right oil for an air compressor depends on three things. Match the compressor type, match the operating conditions, and follow the manufacturer.

Match the compressor type

  • Reciprocating (piston) compressors typically use standard compressor oils.
  • Rotary screw compressors often require specialized synthetic lubricants.
  • Oil-free compressors use food-grade lubricants for their bearings.

Match the operating conditions

Environmental factors change how a lubricant performs. Consider:

  • Ambient temperature range
  • Humidity levels
  • Presence of contaminants
  • Duty cycle: continuous or intermittent use
  • Installation location: indoor or outdoor

Harsh conditions call for synthetic oils with high thermal stability and oxidation resistance.

Follow the manufacturer

The compressor manual lists the oil recommendations for each model. Follow those guidelines to keep the warranty valid.

For the differences between mineral, synthetic, and semi-synthetic oils, read the oil types and viscosity guide.
