MOTION & CONVEYOR CONTROL

Winding & Conveyor Control

SAM builds two controllers for production machinery. One winds reels. One runs conveyors. SAM designs and assembles both in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

The Reel Winder 2.22R is a tabletop respooler for wire, filament, and coil winding. Two independently vector-controlled motors coordinate the take-up spool and the traverse in closed loop. No mechanical linkage connects them, so backlash and spool-to-traverse drift do not appear. Length accuracy is ±1.5% typical. Closed-loop tension control covers 5 to 2000 g, which suits magnet-wire, medical tubing, and natural fibers.

The machine winds at up to 800 RPM on 2.5 kW of drive power. It takes one electrical connection and needs no shop air. Recipe management stores a job once and recalls it for later runs. A web interface reports job data and use metrics.

The SAM PCB Controllers Conveyor Controller is a DIN-rail unit with conveyor logic in place out of the box. It is IPC-SMEMA-9851 compatible, so it drops into existing PCB lines that expect the standard handshake. It runs forward and reverse under program control. Integrated stepper motor drivers remove the external driver module. Basic and advanced configurations are available.

Use the conveyor controller where a Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Mitsubishi PLC is overkill in cost and in ladder-programming complexity. It suits PCB handling and general indoor material handling. Outdoor installs and heavy-industrial three-phase VFD conveyors are out of scope.
